The 2005 Nickel Series

The 2005 Nickel Series is a set of five different designs of the United States five-cent coin (nickel) that were issued by the U.S. Mint in 2004 and 2005 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The designs feature different images related to the Expedition and its participants. The five designs are: “American Bison” – featuring an image of a bison on the reverse (tails) side of the coin. “Ocean in view! O! The Joy!” – featuring an image of a hand holding a compass over a map of the western United States with the words “Ocean in view! O! The Joy!” on the reverse side. “Keelboat” – featuring an image of the explorers’ keelboat on the reverse side. “Peace Medal” – featuring an image of a handshake between Lewis and Clark and a Native American with the words “Peace and Friendship” on the reverse side. “Louisiana Purchase” – featuring an image of the outline of the Louisiana Purchase territory on the reverse side. Each of the designs was released for a limited time, with the first design released in 2004 and the final design released in 2005.
