America the Beautiful Quarters® Program Vicksburg National Military Park (MS)

The America the Beautiful Quarters® Program is a coin series produced by the United States Mint that honors national parks, forests, and other sites of historic and cultural significance throughout the United States and its territories. One of the sites featured in this program is Vicksburg National Military Park, located in Vicksburg, Mississippi. This park preserves the site of one of the most important battles of the American Civil War, the Siege of Vicksburg. The battle lasted from May 18 to July 4, 1863, and resulted in a Union victory that effectively cut the Confederacy in half. The Vicksburg National Military Park quarter was released by the U.S. Mint in 2011 as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. The reverse side of the quarter features a depiction of the USS Cairo, a Union gunboat that was sunk in the Yazoo River during the Vicksburg campaign. The design also includes the inscription “Vicksburg,” “Mississippi,” “2011,” and “E Pluribus Unum.” The obverse side of the coin features the portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States.
